When considering or enjoying a federal holiday, I’d wager that only a comparative few of us stop to consider its actual significance and purpose. Consider Memorial Day.
As History.com reminds us:
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
Memorial Day is intended to honor those in the US armed forces who died in service to their country. Of course, these days, this country is, as in the past, being torn apart as we debate the US involvement in several wars raging in other parts of the world. I won’t say more about that here, except to express the futile wish that the dying would stop.
But since this long weekend is also a pivot point for us all to usher in summer and take a break to refresh and restore, I thought you might somehow like these two photographs. The first is yours truly with a consequential mug — the mug and I mugging for the camera.
The second is just a serene notice I ran across, and thought you might appreciate.
Enjoy your time off!
Thank you! Good to see your face and I loved the second picture with the poem. I am remembering what Memorial Day means - thank you for writing so others will remember too.
Agreed...to the max!
