I subscribe to Who/What/Why, which includes your articles. I enjoy them a lot and this analysis of what we have known or suspected about MSM for ages is a welcome respite.
The other problem is that people don't read, they get their news from TV, and too many of them get their news from Fox or the other misinformation shows. They should not be allowed to call themselves "news."
Fox News needs to be eliminated, somehow. Why can't we sue them or something?
fully agree..It does not help that access sites such as Yahoo are very selective in the articles they re-post - notably, the majority come from right-wing sources such as Fox news, the Telegraph, etc... There is not even the attempt at fair coverage of issues - and funny enough, try a rebuttal to a comment - "your comment failed to publish"- - retry"
Correct. Mainstream media has been hollowed out. It is reactive to what politicians say, not what they do.
But mainstream media culture has also changed. When I broke into full-time journalism, newspapers had robust business sections and also quoted stories in trade/business/ professional publications. Now the former Dean of Columbia's journalism school can survey American journalism without ever mentioning specialized publications... where most journalists actually work!
Crime is down. You would never know it from any mainstream source. The safest big city in America is Boston, capital of the nation's bluest state... just 13 murders so far this year, among a population of 700,000. DC has same population and ten times the murders. On the other side, the top 1% pay a third of federal income taxes. Progressives insist they pay no taxes at all! We tolerate this nonsense.
let's stop calling them "mainstream". For Profit Media is CORPORATE media. I'm now getting my news from Substack authors and non profits like Mother Jones and NPR.
This is the best thing I've read all week, thanks for putting it into words we can all relate to and understand, but couldn't articulate.

and a very appropriate choice of label! The old adage still applies - follow the money - find out who owns what and who is connected to whom..
I forget who began using it, it was one of the Substack authors I follow and everyone else has been using it once they learn it.
